The short version
ChatGPT is the generalist: it does chat, pictures and voice in one place, and OpenAI sells more price points than anyone else. Claude is the specialist for long writing, reading and coding, with a simpler plan line-up and a yearly discount.
Both have free plans, neither offers a free trial of the paid plan, and both keep your chat history if you drop back to free.
What you'll actually pay in a year
ChatGPT Plus: $20 × 12 = $240. ChatGPT Go: $8 × 12 = $96, the cheapest paid option from either company.
Claude Pro: $240 if you pay monthly, or $200 if you pay for the year up front, which saves $40.
Prices exclude tax. Subscribing through the iPhone or Android app can cost more than paying on the website, so sign up in a browser.
Usage limits: the part pricing pages bury
Neither plan is unlimited. Claude Pro gives more use than Free, measured every five hours and every week; heavy users are pushed toward Max ($100) or Ultra ($200). ChatGPT Plus also has message caps on its top models, with Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 for heavy use.
If you hit limits on the free plan more than a couple of times a week, a paid plan is worth it. If you hit them on the $20 plan every day, look at the next tier up rather than paying for both apps.
Which one fits your work
Emails, social posts and quick questions: either works. Start with ChatGPT Go at $8 if budget matters.
Long reports, contracts and research PDFs: Claude Pro.
Coding: Claude Pro, because Claude Code is included.
Images for posts, slides or products: ChatGPT Plus.
Small business owners: try our saved prompts in both apps and keep whichever gives you usable drafts with fewer edits.

Common questions
Is ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro cheaper?
Both are $20/month billed monthly. Claude Pro is $17/month if you pay $200 for a year. ChatGPT has a cheaper $8 Go plan, which Claude doesn't match.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for writing?
Many writers prefer Claude for long documents, and Claude Pro includes Projects for keeping reference files together. We didn't benchmark writing quality, so try both free plans on your own drafts.
Can Claude make images?
Claude's pricing page doesn't list image generation. If you need AI images, ChatGPT is the better pick.
Do I need both?
Most people don't. Pick one paid plan and keep the other on its free tier as a second opinion.
Is there a free trial?
No free trial for either paid plan, but both have useful free plans you can test first.
