Summarize a document safely
- 1
Check what you're sharing
Remove private or confidential info before uploading.
- 2
Upload or paste the document
Use a tool that accepts files, or paste the text.
- 3
Ask a specific question
e.g. 'Summarize in 5 bullets for a busy manager'.
- 4
Ask for quotes or page numbers
So you can check the summary against the source.
- 5
Spot-check key facts
Open the original and verify numbers, dates and names.
- 6
Ask follow-ups
Request action items, risks or a plain-English version.
Prompts that give better summaries
"Summarize this in 5 bullet points for a busy reader. After each bullet, note the page or section it came from."
"List every date, deadline, price and obligation in this document in a table."
"What's missing or unclear in this document? What questions should I ask before signing?"
How to catch mistakes
Check the references. If the AI says something is on page 12, look at page 12.
Ask the same question twice in different words. Inconsistent answers are a red flag.
For very long files, summarize section by section. Some tools quietly skip parts of long documents.
Privacy
Don't upload confidential contracts, medical records or client files to a personal account. Use a work account with data controls, or remove names and numbers first.

Common questions
Can AI read scanned PDFs?
Many tools can read scanned pages, but accuracy drops with poor scans. If the summary looks odd, run the file through text recognition first.
