What makes a smart lock renter-friendly

A renter-friendly lock leaves the outside of the door untouched, keeps your landlord's key working and can be removed with no holes or marks. Retrofit locks that replace or cover only the inside thumbturn meet all three.

Keypad deadbolts that replace the whole lock usually don't. They change the keyway, so your landlord's master key stops working, which many leases forbid.

Check your door before you buy

Look at the inside of your deadbolt. A single thumbturn means a single-cylinder deadbolt, which suits August and Level Bolt. A keyhole on both sides is a double-cylinder lock, which retrofit locks don't support.

A long rectangular plate with the handle and lock in one unit is usually a mortise lock; skip August and check SwitchBot's compatibility tool instead. If your door sticks, fix that first: smart locks struggle when you have to push the door to throw the bolt.

Talk to your landlord (briefly)

Even a no-drill lock is worth a quick message. Say the outside lock and keys won't change and you'll restore the original part when you leave. Get the yes in writing.

Moving out without losing your deposit

Bag and label the original thumbturn, screws and mounting plate on install day. Before you move, remove the smart lock, reinstall the original parts, delete all guest codes and remove the lock from your account so the next tenant can't be tracked.

How we picked

We compared official product pages for fit, connectivity and price on November 4, 2026. We haven't installed these locks ourselves, so we don't make claims about battery life beyond what each brand states.

Common questions

Can I put a smart lock on a rental?

Usually yes, if it fits over your existing deadbolt, keeps the outside key working and you restore the original part on move-out. Check your lease and ask your landlord.

Will my landlord's key still work?

With August, SwitchBot and Level Bolt the outside cylinder stays, so existing keys keep working.

Do I need a hub?

August Wi-Fi and SwitchBot Lock Pro Matter have Wi-Fi built in. Level Bolt needs the $79 Connect bridge for remote access.
