The real difference in one line
Ring is a smart home brand that sells an alarm. SimpliSafe is an alarm company that added smart features. That shapes almost every trade-off below.
What you'll actually pay each month
Ring's plans are $4.99/mo ($49.99/yr), $9.99/mo ($99.99/yr) and $19.99/mo ($199.99/yr), the last being the plan that adds professional monitoring and alarm cellular backup. Ring has raised subscription prices more than once, so budget for that.
SimpliSafe prices plans by the day: Self Monitoring 33¢ (about $10/mo), Standard 76¢ (about $23), Core $1.10 (about $33) and Pro / Pro Plus $1.66–$2.66 (about $50–$80). The higher tiers are where video-verified dispatch lives, which can help police treat an alarm as a confirmed event. There's no contract, so you can turn pro monitoring on for a holiday and drop back afterwards.
Equipment prices change weekly with sales on both sides, so we link to each brand's store rather than quoting a kit price that'll be wrong next month.
Smart home and privacy
Ring plugs straight into Alexa and Echo devices and has a huge accessory catalog: sirens, flood and smoke listeners, extra sensors. It does not work natively with Apple Home or Google Home.
SimpliSafe keeps things inside its own app. That's less flexible but simpler, and it isn't tied to one company's speakers.
Who wins for your home
Renters and apartments: SimpliSafe, because no contract and stick-on sensors move with you.
Alexa-heavy homes on a budget: Ring, for the lowest monthly cost and tight Echo integration.
Larger houses where a break-in is the main worry: SimpliSafe, for the video-verified monitoring tiers.

How we picked
We compared each brand's official plan pages for monthly cost, contract terms, backup and smart home support. We haven't run our own break-in or response-time tests, so we don't make claims about dispatch speed.

Common questions
Can I use Ring cameras with SimpliSafe?
Not inside the SimpliSafe app. You'd run two separate apps, so most people stick with one brand's cameras.
Can I use either with no monthly fee?
Both can self-monitor, but most useful features like recorded video and pro monitoring need a paid plan. For truly fee-free video, look at local-storage systems like Eufy.
Does Ring Alarm work if the internet goes out?
Alarm cellular backup is included on the top Ring Home plan. Without it, an internet outage can stop alerts reaching you.
Do I have to sign a contract?
SimpliSafe has no contract. Ring plans are also month-to-month or yearly subscriptions, not multi-year agreements.
