The four options in plain English

Wi-Fi: no hub needed and easy to set up. But dozens of Wi-Fi plugs can crowd your router, and many need their own app.

Zigbee: a low-power mesh that needs a hub (some Echo and SmartThings hubs have one built in). Very reliable when you have lots of devices.

Thread: a newer low-power mesh. It needs a "Thread border router", which many recent HomePod, Nest and Echo devices include.

Matter: not a radio, but a shared language. Matter devices run over Wi-Fi or Thread, and several systems can control them at the same time.

Which one fits your home?

One or two plugs, no hub: a Matter-over-Wi-Fi plug like the P125M.

Lots of devices, or your Wi-Fi feels crowded: Matter-over-Thread (if you already own a border router) or Zigbee.

A mixed family with iPhones and Android phones: Matter, so everyone can use the app they already have.

Want to cut your power bill: a plug with energy monitoring, like the KP125M or EP25.

Who should skip smart plugs

Skip them for space heaters, air conditioners and other appliances that draw a lot of power, unless the maker of that appliance says a plug is OK. Even a 15 A rating leaves little room to spare with a 1500 W heater running for hours.

Skip them outdoors unless the plug is rated for outdoor use. Tapo says the P125M shouldn't be used in damp places or outside.

If your router only has a 5 GHz network, these plugs won't connect. They need 2.4 GHz.

How we picked

We didn't test these plugs ourselves. We compared the specs on each brand's official product page and datasheet: Matter certification, which systems they work with, maximum load, size, and energy features. We chose plugs that make it clear which systems they support and how much power they can handle.

Common questions

Do Matter plugs need a hub?

Matter-over-Wi-Fi plugs like the Tapo P125M don't. Matter-over-Thread plugs need a Thread border router, which many recent smart speakers and displays include.

Do smart plugs work when the internet is down?

Matter plugs can keep working on your home network without the internet. TP-Link says the P125M and KP125M support local control, so on/off commands from your home still work during an outage.

Can a smart plug lower my electricity bill?

Only if you act on what it shows you. Plugs with energy monitoring, like the KP125M, show which devices use the most power. Then you can schedule them to switch off or run at cheaper times.

Will a smart plug work with both Alexa and Apple Home?

A Matter-certified plug can be added to more than one system at a time. Older non-Matter plugs usually support one or two systems, so check the box.

Is it safe to use a smart plug with a space heater?

Many heater makers say to plug heaters straight into the wall. Follow the heater's manual first, even if the plug is rated 15 A.
