What does 'no subscription' really mean for a doorbell?

Almost every doorbell shows a live view for free. The real question is what happens after a free trial: can you still save clips, play them back and get person alerts? Every pick here records to storage you own, so those keep working with no monthly fee.

Where the video lives differs: inside the doorbell (eufy), on a memory card in the doorbell (Reolink, Tapo) or on a card in the indoor chime (Aqara). A card inside the doorbell can be stolen with it, so wired models that also save to an indoor hub or NVR are safer.

How much do you save over three years?

Ring's plans start at $4.99/month, which is about $180 over three years for one doorbell, and more on higher tiers. A doorbell with local storage costs nothing after you buy it, apart from a memory card if it needs one (usually under $20 for 64–128GB).

Wired or battery: which should you choose?

Wired: no charging, and it can record around the clock. Pick wired if you already have a doorbell button connected to a chime.

Battery: installs anywhere in minutes and suits renters, but records only when it detects motion and needs recharging every few months.

Check your existing chime before buying. Some doorbells don't work with digital chimes and need an adapter or the included indoor chime.

Which doorbell fits your home?

Wired house, want 24/7 recording: Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi.

Renting or no wiring: eufy E340.

Lots of parcels: eufy E340, for its second camera.

Lowest cost: Tapo D235.

Apple Home: Aqara G4.

How we picked

We compared each maker's official product and spec pages on November 5, 2026, and only included doorbells whose makers say recording works with no paid plan. We haven't installed these doorbells ourselves. Prices for Reolink, eufy and Aqara were read from each brand's US store on November 5, 2026; sale prices change often. Tapo's US store didn't list a D235 price that day, so we left it out rather than guess.

Common questions

Is there a video doorbell with no monthly fee?

Yes. The Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi, eufy Video Doorbell E340, Tapo D235 and Aqara Video Doorbell G4 all save video locally, so recording and playback work without a subscription.

Does Ring work without a subscription?

Ring shows live view and alerts without a plan, but you need a paid Ring Home plan (from $4.99/month) to save and play back recordings.

Can a battery video doorbell record 24/7?

Generally no. Battery doorbells record when they detect motion to save power. For continuous recording, choose a wired model.

What happens to footage if someone steals the doorbell?

If clips are stored only inside the doorbell, they go with it. Models that save to an indoor chime, hub or NVR keep the footage safe.

Do I need an electrician?

Not usually. Battery models just screw on. Wired models replace an existing doorbell on low-voltage wiring; turn the power off at the breaker first.
