What "no subscription" really means

Every camera here works without a monthly plan. Video is saved to a memory card or hub inside your home, and you watch it in the free app.

What you give up: if a thief takes the camera or the card, the clip goes with it. Mount cameras high, or use a hub kept indoors like the HomeBase 3.

Card vs hub storage

A microSD card is the cheapest route: one card per camera, nothing else to buy. It's ideal for one or two cameras.

A hub keeps every camera's footage in one place indoors and holds far more. It's worth it once you pass three cameras.

Battery, solar or wired?

Wired cameras like the Tapo C120 never need charging and can record around the clock. Battery cameras like the Argus 4 Pro go anywhere but record only when motion triggers them. A solar panel cuts down on charging trips.

How we picked

We compared official spec sheets for storage limits, power, weather rating and which smart alerts work without a paid plan. We haven't run our own hands-on tests, so we don't rate video quality.

Common questions

Can I really use these cameras for free?

Yes. You pay for the camera and storage once. Cloud backup is optional.

What size microSD card do I need?

Both the Argus 4 Pro and Tapo C120 take up to 512GB. A bigger card simply keeps more days before old clips are overwritten.

Do they work with Alexa or Google?

The Tapo C120 works with Alexa and Google Assistant displays. The Argus 4 Pro lists Google Assistant support.
