Pick the shape first: mesh or one router

Coverage problems are usually about walls and floors, not speed ratings. One router in the middle of an apartment beats any mesh kit. A two-storey house with the modem in a corner almost always needs mesh.

Not sure which you are? Our mesh Wi-Fi vs single router guide walks through it room by room.

What the specs actually mean

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band. It's fast and uncrowded, but only newer phones and laptops use it, and it doesn't travel through walls as well.

Headline numbers like "AXE5400" add up every band at once. No single device will ever see that speed, so compare coverage and ports instead.

Multi-gig (2.5 Gbps) ports only matter if your internet plan is faster than 1 Gbps or you move big files around the house.

Smart home bonus

The eero Pro 6E doubles as a Thread border router and Zigbee hub, and the Nest Wifi Pro works as a Thread border router for Matter devices. That can save you buying a separate hub. The ASUS has no smart home radio.

How we picked

We compared official specs from each brand's own pages for coverage, ports, Wi-Fi standard and smart home support, then matched each to the home it suits best. We haven't run our own lab speed tests, so we don't quote speed results. Prices change often, so check the brand's store before you buy.

Common questions

Do I need Wi-Fi 6E?

Only if you own recent phones or laptops that support 6 GHz and want the fastest in-room speeds. Wi-Fi 6 is still plenty for most homes.

Can I use my own router with my internet provider?

Usually yes. Plug it into the provider's modem, or set the provider's gateway to bridge mode so you don't run two networks.

Is a mesh system faster than one router?

Not next to the router. Mesh wins in far rooms because each unit is closer to you.
